Ian Banks, PhD | Director of Regulatory Affairs

What's your professional background?

Since 2010, I have dedicated my career to exploring the enormous potential of the black soldier fly (BSF) in academia and industry. My Master’s and Doctorate research focused on utilizing BSF to improve sanitation in low-and middle-income communities. After completing my studies, I transitioned to industry, joining a company that upcycled food waste using BSF. In this role, I contributed to foundational research, product and project development, business development, fundraising, PR, media, and regulatory affairs. In 2021, I joined another insect-ag company, where I worked with regulators, trade associations, and research centers to advance US regulations. Now at EnviroFlight, I am excited to apply my skills and experience to help the insect-ag sector continue to grow and thrive.

What do you do at EnviroFlight?

I am responsible for directing external and internal projects that help define and develop North American insect-agriculture regulations, leading to new market opportunities. I work closely with external collaborators to develop industry-wide regulatory strategies and industry-specific best practices.
