Building a better tomorrow

Sustainability is at the core of our business. We are dedicated to enhancing lives and health. We know our impact goes beyond what we do — how we do it matters, too.
Committed to sustainability

Our three sustainability pillars guide our efforts to ensure excellence, safety and sustainability in everything we do.

  • Health and well being

  • Communities and workplaces

  • Responsible production

Health and well being

We produce solutions that enhance health and well-being with a steadfast commitment to safety and quality. Guided by strict polices and industry-leading standards, we ensure excellence at every step of our production process

Responsible production

We promote a circular and sustainable economy by creating value from collagen-rich by-products from various industries and repurposing our own by-products. We strive to minimize energy and water usage, as well as greenhouse gas emissions.

We also prioritize ethical sourcing with strict supplier compliance and robust traceability. All of our facilities are registered with the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (Sedex), the largest collaborative platform for sharing ethical supply chain data. Additionally, we work with regulatory agencies at the federal, state and local levels where we operate to protect animal health and well-being and ensure compliance to application regulations.

Solar panels in Spain
Girona is the first site within Rousselot to produce its own renewable electricity through solar panels, installed in early 2023. These solar panels generated 231 MWh of renewable energy in 2023.

Water reduction in France
By re-using cooling water as process water and implementing a new process that partly reuses effluents, our L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue facility decreased water consumption by more than 1 million cubic meters compared to the prior year, a ~20% reduction.

From sludge to fertilizer in France
Sludge is a by-product of gelatin operations. It contains minerals vital to the agricultural sector, such as phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, potassium and nitrogen. Our L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, France plant converts sludge as fertilizer to farms on the Plateau d’Albion.

Where we stand on key issues

CO2 emissions

Our parent company, Darling Ingredients, has set a goal to reduce scope 1 and 2 emissions 42% by 2030, with plans to submit its target to the Science Based Targets initiative for validation by the end of 2024.

Water use

We responsibly manage the water we use and generate in our operations, and we are committed to monitoring and mitigating water risks and continuously exploring and employing a variety of water recovery and reuse processes that help increase efficiency.

We are a member of the Gelatin Manufacturers of Europe (GME) association, which has established a sustainable development committee responsible for the environmental, social and economic dimension of the European gelatin industry.

Deforestation

We strictly adhere to all regulatory requirements when sourcing materials, and hold our suppliers to the highest standards of responsible sourcing. Our rigorous monitoring and audits processes ensure compliance, and we promptly discontinue partnership with suppliers that fail to meet our criteria. We mandate that all suppliers of animal-based co-products have robust environmental policies in place. In Brazil, we require all suppliers to be certified by the Leather Working group (LWG), a global leader in eliminating supply chain deforestation. For suppliers in the Amazon region, known as Legal Amazon, we require compliance with the LWG Gold Standard, the highest benchmark for environmental performance.

Responsible sourcing

We make sure we fully understand the supply chains we use and have implemented strict tracing systems to follow our raw materials. We require all suppliers to comply with all strict regulatory requirements and provide necessary traceability documents. By working with suppliers that meet our standards for sourcing, we can help promote an industry that values traceability, animal welfare, safety and sustainability.

Our raw material suppliers must guarantee that their materials are sourced from authorized establishments, providing animals fit for human consumption, inspected by veterinarians and compliant with relevant regulations concerning animal welfare.

Animal welfare

Animals should be treated with respect, and we are committed to support all reasonable measures aimed at improving animal welfare, based on the “Five Freedoms” defined by the OIE (World Organization for Animal Health).  As a member of the Gelatin Manufacturers of Europe (GME), we are firmly committed to animal welfare, along with other European gelatin manufacturers. GME strongly supports full implementation and strict enforcement of all EU animal welfare legislation, in line with the objectives of the European Green Deal and the Farm to Fork Strategy.

Human rights

We are committed to respecting and upholding fundamental human rights in all of our business activities and to working with customers, suppliers, agents, contractors, consultants, vendors and partners who are committed to the same standards.

We prohibit the employment of underage children and the use of forced or compulsory labor in any of our global operations and expect our suppliers to do the same, as outlined in our Supplier Code of Conduct and Human Rights Policy.

All of our sites currently registered with Sedex, is a world-leading ethical trade organization that helps businesses improve working conditions in global supply chains and assesses on-site standards of labor, workplace health and safety, as well as environmental and business ethics. Rousselot has been a member of Sedex since 2010.
